The Alexander House, also known as Alexander’s Castle, was built in 1886 by Reverend John B. Alexander and originally predates Fort Worden. It was a private residence built for a Scottish bride-to-be, but a heartbroken Alexander returned to find she had already married someone else. The US Army later acquired the land, built Fort Worden around the castle, and used it as a military residence before it was decommissioned and became a rental property within the state park. After Alexander’s return and resignation from his ministry, he continued to live in the castle while serving as Vice Consul until 1892. The government acquired the property in 1897. The Alexander House is now a historic vacation rental available for public lodging.
