Built during the California Gold Rush, the Hotel Léger is one of the state’s oldest continuously operating hotels. Founded in 1851 by French immigrant George Léger, the property originally stood beside the Calaveras County Courthouse. When the county seat moved in 1866, Léger purchased the courthouse and merged it with his hotel, creating the stone structure that still stands today.
After surviving multiple fires—including a major one in 1874—the hotel was rebuilt and reopened in 1879 under its current name. The bar’s stained-glass back panel, dated 1851, and remnants of the old courthouse jail remain as historic features. Over its 170-plus years, the hotel has hosted travelers, locals, and legends alike. In 2023, it was purchased by the Mostovoy and Maller families, who restored the property and revived community traditions.
The hotel is famous for its ghostly encounters. Visitors and staff have reported sightings of at least three different spirits:
- George Léger: The hotel’s original owner, who died in 1879, is often seen wandering the saloon and various rooms.
- A Crying Woman: Guests have reported hearing a woman weeping for her child, adding to the eerie atmosphere.
- A Child: Sightings of a playful child have also been noted, contributing to the hotel’s haunted reputation.
Many guests have shared their experiences, describing strange occurrences such as objects moving and unexplained noises. The hotel even offers ghost-hunting kits for those interested in exploring its haunted history.
Hotel Léger is widely regarded as one of the most haunted hotels in California, attracting ghost hunters and curious visitors alike. Its combination of historical charm and ghostly tales makes it a unique destination for those seeking a paranormal experience. Guests and locals alike have reported paranormal experiences ranging from flickering lights and mysterious footsteps to the sounds of a woman crying and the laughter of a child. The spirit of founder George Léger is said to still roam the halls, particularly in Room 7, while other rooms have their own eerie reputations—Room 2 for a weeping woman and Room 3 for a playful child by the fireplace. Whether these stories stem from legend or something supernatural, the Hotel Léger’s haunted reputation continues to draw curious visitors and ghost hunters from around the world.
