The Dumas Brothel – Butte, MT

The Dumas Brothel in Butte, Montana, was built in 1890. It was the longest continuously running brothel in the United States until it closed in 1982.. Brothers Joseph and Arthur Nadeau built the brothel, naming it after Joseph’s wife’s maiden name. The brothel catered to different clientele based on the floor. 

The main floor served middle-class patrons, while the upstairs had more elegant rooms for higher-class ladies.  The basement, known as the “cribs,” housed lower-paying clients. It also concealed a stash of liquor from the Prohibition era. 

The brothel was forced to close in 1982 when its madam, Ruby, went to prison. After closing, the building was sold in 1990 and has since been operated as a museum.   It is currently owned by David and Charlee Prince.

Ghost Sightings: Visitors and staff have reported seeing a spectral woman carrying a suitcase, believed to be the ghost of Elinor Knott, a former madam who died under mysterious circumstances.
