The Waterstreet Hotel was formerly housed in the historic N.D. Hill Building in Port Townsend, Washington, which was originally constructed in 1889. The Monarch Hotel now occupies the same space.
The three-story Italianate-style brick building was erected at 635 Water Street in 1889 for retired pharmacist N.D. Hill at a cost of $25,000. It was designed by Seattle architect Elmer Fisher.
Hill used the building for his pharmacy business, which he sold off in the 1890s. The upper floors were used for apartments and hotel rooms from the beginning.
A series of popular taverns occupied the corner storefront from 1929 until 2001, with the Town Tavern
being the most well-known and longest-running.
The hotel, which operated on the second and third floors, was at one point known as the DeVillo Hotel after being purchased and renovated by the Benson family in 1928. Sometime after 2001, a tavern closed, and the building was renovated to preserve its historic character. This is when the hotel began operating as the Waterstreet Hotel
The hotel featured historic decor, waterfront suites, and rooms, including some with kitchens. The hotel’s lobby was housed within the Pacific Traditions Gallery, which featured Native American art.
A new owner took over and completed upgrades to the historic building while keeping its character. The hotel was rebranded as the Monarch Hotel and rooms are still available for booking.

Top-hat men: Some guests have claimed to see men in top hats wandering the halls at night. When approached, the apparitions reportedly disappear through walls.
Orbs and footsteps: Others have reported hearing disembodied footsteps and have photographed orbs.
Flashing lights: One guest reported being in a dark room when the overhead light suddenly flashed on and off. Unexplained clatter: A visitor was awoken in the night by the sound of “clicking” nails running quickly across the bedroom floor. They found nothing in the carpeted room after investigating.
